1. Upload Your Content
To set up a viewer-facing video, you'll first need to upload a video to Lumiere. There are two ways to do it:
Drag and drop an accepted file type into your workspace from your files
Click Add New in the top-right corner of your main workspace, select your file, and click Open
For more, see our articles on Uploading Content & Creating Folders and Video Statuses.
2. Enter Setup Mode
To open a video in Setup mode:
From your main workspace, click the video you want to set up.
Videos in Draft status will open in Setup mode automatically.
If your video is in Live or Closed status, click Setup from the menu above the video player.
Setup mode is organized into three sections:
Reactions
Questions
Video Settings
3. Add Feedback Modes
Feedback modes are how viewers react to your content. There are two kinds — Persistent Reactions and Prompted Questions. For a deeper dive on each, see our articles on Viewer Reactions and Prompted Questions.
Reactions
Under the Reactions tab, you can choose from three Reaction types:
Comments
Emojis
One Touch
Reactions let viewers submit feedback, thoughts, and emotions in real time as they watch.
To add a Reaction to your video:
Enter your video's Setup.
Open the Reactions tab on the left side of your screen.
Use the dropdown menu in the left-side panel to choose your reaction type.
Use the additional controls in the panel to customize it.
Prompted Questions
To add a new question to your video:
Enter your video's Setup.
Open the Questions tab on the left side of your screen.
On the video timeline, navigate to the moment when you want the question to appear.
Click Add + next to Questions in the left-side panel — or use the + shortcut next to the timestamp on the video player — to open the question picker.
Choose your question type from the pop-up.
Click Insert at x:xx in the bottom right corner of the question picker to add it to your video.
Use the video player to update the question prompt, rows, and labels.
Use the left-side settings panel to further customize the question.
4. Turn on Conversations
Conversations help you dig deeper into a viewer's comment or question response.
To turn on Conversations for Comments:
Enter your video's Setup.
Open the Reactions tab on the left side of your screen.
In the left-side settings panel, toggle on AI Conversations.
A default Conversation Goal will appear below the toggle. Adjust it to guide the AI's follow-up conversations with viewers.
For more, see our article on AI Conversations.
5. Adjust Your Video's Settings
Video settings cover the video as a whole — how it appears to viewers (like the video thumbnail) and what controls they have while watching (scrubbing, speed control, and more).
To adjust your video's settings:
Enter your video's Setup.
Open the ⚙️ Settings tab on the left side of your screen.
Use the left-side settings panel to customize.
6. Add Scenes
Scenes divide your video into smaller segments for deeper analysis. They help you spot which parts of your video are connecting with your audience, which scenes are hitting hardest, and which moments are pulling the strongest reactions.
For more, see our article on Scenes.
To manually add scenes:
Go to Video Setup.
On the video timeline, navigate to where you want Scene 1 to end and Scene 2 to begin.
Click the + next to Scenes below the video player.
A new scene will be created at that timestamp, running until the next scene starts (or until the end of the video).
To use AI-suggested scenes:
Go to Video Setup.
On the right side of the video player, toggle on Show Suggestions.
Click any suggested scene card to add it to your list of scenes.
Once your video is set up, give it a quick test before sending it out for data collection. For tips on getting the most out of setup, check out our article on Video Setup Best Practices.
