Introduction
Lumiere isn't a cookie-cutter tool. The best setup for your video depends on what you're testing and the insights you're after. Below, you'll find the key settings to think through and how to orient them around the metrics you care about most.
General Video Settings
Scrubbing and Speed Controls
Scrubbing lets viewers move freely along the video timeline, both forward and backward.
Speed controls let viewers watch at 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, or 2x speed.
To adjust these settings:
Go to your video's Setup.
Open the Settings tab on the left side of your screen.
Locate and adjust the Scrubbing and Speed Control settings.
Things to consider for scrubbing
Letting viewers jump forward can mean they miss key context, which can affect how accurately they react or respond to questions.
If retention is a key metric for your team, leave scrubbing on. Your insights dashboard will show where viewers spent the most time and which parts they may have skipped.
Things to consider for speed controls
Turning speed controls off keeps the original format intact — viewers get the same experience as someone catching your content on TV or online.
Turning them on makes your video more accessible (great for viewers who need a slower pace) and gives your audience more freedom in how they watch.
Questions
Required Status
You can set any question to Required, which means viewers have to respond before the video continues.
To toggle on Required for a question:
Go to your video's Setup.
Open the Questions tab on the left side of your screen.
Select a question to open its controls.
Toggle on Required.'
Things to consider:
Setting every question to Required ensures you get a response from every viewer.
Too many questions can distract from the content you're actually testing.
Too many questions also bumps up your Length of Interview (LOI), which can raise the cost of your recruited sample and lead to interview fatigue — viewers getting tired of answering. That can show up as inaccurate data, incomplete responses, or even viewer drop-off.
Hide Video
The Hide Video setting can be turned on for any question type except Hotspots. When it's on, the video frame behind the question gets blurred so viewers can't see the content.
To toggle on Hide Video for a question:
Go to your video's Setup.
Open the Questions tab on the left side of your screen.
Select a question to open its controls.
Toggle on Hide Video.
Things to consider:
Turn it on for quiz-style or recall questions where the video might give away the answer (like a brand name, character, or actor shown on screen).
Leave it off if your audience needs to see the content to make an informed response.
Reactions
Choosing the right reaction type matters — each one gives you a different set of metrics to measure your content with. Here's what you'll capture with each.
Comments
Total Comments: The total number of comments your audience submits. Comparing this across scenes or videos shows which content was most engaging.
Comment Summary: Our AI summarizes what your audience is saying. Whether you've got 20 comments or 2,000, you'll get a quick read on how the content landed overall.
Sentiment: Using Natural Language Processing (NLP), Lumiere scores each comment and categorizes it as Positive, Negative, or Neutral. You can see sentiment per comment and the average across all comments.
Secondary Feedback (if applicable): Pair a secondary feedback mode with Persistent Comments for added context — like the average rating or top emoji submitted alongside the comments.
Retention: The percentage of total watch time consumed by your viewers. Shows which parts viewers rewatched, skipped, or dropped off at.
Heat Map: Viewers click directly on the screen to leave comments. The dashboard shows where each comment was placed, highlighting your most eye-catching moments.
Emojis
Total Emojis: The total number of emojis submitted. Comparing across scenes or videos shows what's most engaging — and looking at the emoji types tells you what kind of emotional response you're getting.
Retention: The percentage of total watch time consumed. Shows where viewers rewatched, skipped, or dropped off.
Key Moments: Our algorithm flags moments with a statistically significant difference in engagement compared to the content around them — so you can quickly see what's hitting (or not).
One Touch
Total Touches: The total number of touches submitted. Comparing across scenes or videos shows which content was most engaging.
Retention: The percentage of total watch time consumed. Shows where viewers rewatched, skipped, or dropped off.
